I needed to take a pair of reading glasses with me whenever playing golf or going shopping, but the problem was of knowing where to put them when not needed, and I often mislaid the glasses or lost them. Most of the glasses straps in the opticians were fuddy duddy with the cords hanging down in front of the ears.
So guess what I decided to design some which looked fashionable and did the job I wanted. After a lot of research I managed to find suitable cords and tried to think up a name. 'Glasshoppers' came to mind and rather reminded me of the 'Kung Fu' programme from the 70s starring 'Grasshopper'
So I bought the .co.uk domain name and then the domain .com, which was on sale in the USA.
Mext job was to get a logo and I sketched a rough design that my graphics designer friend smartened up for me.
Next I found a manufacturer and after countless samples to get the colours right the first Glasshopper was born. I then needed to design the packing which could be displayed by opticians and would not come in those horrible plastic blister packs as I wanted to be fairly eco!. I thought business cards were about the right size, and after a lot of playing round finalised the design which is in use today.
Next I took the samples to an optician to ask if in their opinion they would sell - they placed an advance order, taking a few samples which they sold the same day. And what about pricing - the opticians helped me out.
So how many should I order - too few and I would not fulfil orders, too many and I might face a loss, I settled on around 6,000 and have been selling them on the web eversince, and the feedback has been great - you can read the reviews of the glasses straps on the page for each product.
So what about the future - hopefully 'glasshoppers' will be the new name for sunglasses straps, spectacle cords, and glasses straps. Next year we will introduce another model for wider fits.
